A non-custodial parent kept her son in Utah. No custody nor visitation orders were established in advance. Now she couldn’t get him returned to Indiana, and she had no money to hire a lawyer.
These are the cases pro bono attorneys volunteer to help Hoosiers with, and John Cowan, a Fort Wayne attorney at Tourkow, Crell, Rosenblatt & Johnston, LLP, handled just such a case in 2008. He succeeded in helping that mother regain her son. She is now employed and could pay for a private attorney for a legal matter, however, this mother will never forget how an attorney helped her without charge in her hour of greatest need.
Cowan has given more than 500 hours of legal service to people through the volunteer lawyer program since that case in 2008.
